The Helpline volunteer is a committed and dedicated individual whose contribution to Women's Aid is vital in ensuring that Women's Aid can continue to offer quality advice and support to women at any time that the lines are open. For many women who contact the Helpline, the worker who answers the phone may be the first person they have told about their abuse. It may have taken years to work up the courage to finally talk and so it is essential that the person who answers that call is able to listen and support that caller, as well as provide them with accurate and appropriate information. The response a woman receives from the volunteer can be vital in ensuring that calling the Helpline is the first step in the journey to a life free of violence. The work can be difficult, but the rewards are great. Because Women's Aid recognises and acknowledges how difficult the work can be, there is consistent support provided to enable volunteers to continue the work. Regular meetings are held with all volunteers. There is a selection procedure and extensive Helpline Volunteer Training for those wishing to volunteer on the Helpline. If you are interested in working with like-minded women and helping to eliminate violence against women by becoming a volunteer on the Women's Aid National Freephone Helpline, please contact us at Helpline@womensaid.ie and a volunteer application form and the dates of the next Volunteer Training will be forwarded to you. |
