Tips for the Desert

Your passport must have at least 6 months unexpired time left at time of travel. We need your passport number about 6 weeks before we travel for the Egyptian Authorities.

At the moment none is required. However this tends to vary. If one is required it costs about $20 and can be paid on arrival.

The Egyptian pound is a soft currency and not available outside the country. (Don't bring any home with you unless as a souvenir.) One Egyptian pound is worth about € 0.23 cent. Take U.S. Dollars or Sterling in either cash (notes) or Travellers cheques.

Tipping is usual in Egypt. It is expected that we tip about €32 per person travelling on the safari at the end of the trip. This money is pooled and shared between all the Arab staff who will look after us in the desert (cooks, drivers, guides etc).

If you allow the porters at the airport to carry your bags it costs about £2 Egy. ($1).

So it's handy to have a few U.S. Dollars with you.

It is not permitted to take photos of any military personnel or structures.

It is impolite to take photos of any local people without asking permission, and it is never permitted to photograph women, so don't even ask.

If you are taking a video camera, you must declare it to customs at the airport.

Egypt is a Muslim country and alcohol is not sold freely.

If you want to drink during your visit you must take duty free with you (soft drinks are provided in the desert).

Soft bags or holdalls must be used. Suitcases are unsuitable.
